What is HYPOKALEMIA? Fast Basics

A serum potassium level lower than 3.5mEq/L is called HYPOKALEMIA

The normal value is 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L

Potassium rich foods can be found as follows.
1. Avocado
2. Bananas
3. Cantaloupe
4. Carrots
5. Fish
6. Mushrooms
7. Oranges
8. Potatoes
9. Pork, beef, veal
10. Raisins,
11. Spinach
12. Strawberries
13. Tomatoes

CAUSES:
1. Medications: Diuretics or Corticosteroids
2. Cushing's syndrome
3. Gastrointestinal wound drainage
4. Vomiting  and diarrhea
5. Nasogastric suction is prolonged
6. Excessive diaphoresis
7. Kidney diseases
8. Fasting
9. Alkalosis
10. Hyperinsulinism
11. Water intoxication
12.  Potassium-deficit solutions in IV therapies
